two beats off

-fugazi (album: repeater)

maybe not their best bassline, but their most unique.

*BEWARE. nostalgic yammering ahead*

i saw them on this tour back in ‘91 in minneapolis when they played at the just-defunct faust theater (porno theater by bloom-lake that sonic warp productions used to hold shows at, later to become the heart of the beast puppet and mask theater where profane existence/t.h.u.d.-house crustpunks would go to build their tallbikes and make their 20-foot mayday reaper puppets before they all relocated back to the west bank after first ave bartenders got sick of the new management and opened up the triple rock (great shows there (califone was stellar), but the best nights are had playing poker upstairs) and gwar had played the night before and left all their big foam-rubber props onstage and a huge fight broke out between the s.h.a.r.p. and m.o.b. skins (the hammerskin nords were there but kept back) after the funseekers finished their set and it was fucking-humid-and-hot-summer-day and the house had just painted the floor blue and everyone coming out of the pit looked like a battle-bloodied smurf. ask me sometime and i’ll tell you about the sick of it all/sacred reich/napalm death/sepultura show or sonic youth’s goo tour that all happened that year. i did skip the jesus and mary chain though, because it was on x-mas eve night.

and evidently unseen as it stands to new-jack, i met hopper for the first time at that show and don’t tell me when i can’t call someone out for being a worthless addition to anything. oh. and sXe pioneer ian mackaye, who was refusing to interview with rolling stone or spin because he didn’t want his article appearing beside an advert for absolut or miller, was drinking quite heavily during his fugazi days. also: i’ll give chicago mid-ministry and big black (shellac doesn’t count because trainer lives in mipples) and jesus lizard and crucial conflict. that’s it.
